Who Are We?
WAKSAW (WAKSAW Archaeological Alliance) is a non-profit dedicated to the archaeology, cultural heritage, and historical research of the Swat Valley (Uḍḍiyāna) and its neighbors, such as the region historically known as “Gandhāra.” We support archaeological excavations, artifact preservation, academic research and publication, community education, and so forth. We partner with universities and research institutions worldwide to make their legacy accessible to both scholars and the public.
What We Do?
At the moment, WAKSAW sponsors various kinds of acdemic research related to the study of the Buddhist culture and heritage of Swat Valley and its neighboring regions; the areas that we are interested in are:
-
Gandhāra Buddhism, e.g., archaeology, manuscript and inscription, art history, social and cultural history of the historical region of Gandhāra (Pakistan, Afghanistan, etc);
-
Esoteric Buddhism in Uḍḍiyāna, especially its connection with Padmasambhava, i.e., Guru Rinpoche, and its transmission to the Himalayas;
-
The ongoing archaeological excavation and research in the Swat Valley;
-
And so forth; we look forward to hearing about your proposal.

New Publication Announcement

Uḍḍiyāna: The Way of Swāt
By Giuseppe Tucci
Edited by Giuseppe Vignato | With Notes by Luca M. Olivieri | Preface by Abdul Samad
We are proud to announce the publication of Uḍḍiyāna: The Way of Swāt, released in 2025 by Sang-e-Meel Publications under the auspices of the WAKSAW–Uḍḍiyāna Archaeological Alliance.
This commemorative volume marks the 70th anniversary of the Italian Archaeological Mission in Swat (1955–2025) and brings together two of Tucci’s seminal works—Travels of Tibetan Pilgrims in the Swāt Valley (1940) and La Via dello Swāt (1963/1978)—enriched with new notes and illustrations spanning seventy years of archaeological research.
Featuring historic and contemporary photographs, updated maps of pilgrimage routes, and new insights into Swat’s layered past, the book highlights the enduring importance of Swat as a crossroads of civilizations and a spiritual homeland of Vajrayāna Buddhism.

Padmasambhava, Uḍḍiyāna, and Tibet Seminar Series
Exploring the Interwoven Heritage of South and Central Asia
WAKSAW is proud to support and engage in the Padmasambhava, Uḍḍiyāna, and Tibet Seminar Series — an interdisciplinary program exploring the historical, cultural, and religious legacy of Padmasambhava and the regions of Kashmir, Uḍḍiyāna (Swat), and Tibet.
Based at the Tibetan & Himalayan Studies Centre, Wolfson College, Oxford, the series brings together historians, archaeologists, and religious studies experts to examine how these regions interacted through ritual, art, and the transmission of knowledge — shaping the broader landscape of Himalayan and Central Asian Buddhism.
